ELECTRONIC PIZZA
Tuesday, October 8, 2002 6:00 PM
Marine Science Auditorium, room 114, UH Manoa Campus

"Electronic Pizza" was founded in 1984 to provide an informal monthly forum for
engineers, technicians, consultants, and entrepreneurs to discuss their efforts
to exploit the latest electronic technologies in areas such as broadcast and
cable TV production, electronic imaging, information processing,
telecommunications, testing & measurement, etc. Use this opportunity to
network with "techies", and other individuals involved in high-tech development
in Hawaii.
Presentation by: Nancy E. Reed, PhD.
UH Dept. of Electrical Engineering
                        Antonomous Agents

An autonomous agent is a computer system that is capable of independent action
on behalf of its owner or user. This talk gives an introduction to autonomous
agents and describes applications of agents in several different areas.
Examples of existing agent systems will be shown, including agents that play
soccer and agents that fly aircraft.

Nancy E. Reed received a B.S. degree in Biology and M.S. (1988) and PhD. (1995)
degrees in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining
the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa,
Dr. Reed was an assistant professor in the Computer and Information Science
Department at the University of Linkoping, Sweden, and at Sonoma State
University.Dr. Reed is a member of the American Association for Artificial
Intelligence (AAAI), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the
Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the IEEE
Computer Society.

Dr. Reed's research interests are in the areas of artificial intelligence,
autonomous agents, cognitive modeling, diagnosis, knowledge-based systems,
knowledge acquisition, medical informatics, and real-time systems. Recent
research activities include the design of autonomous agents in simulation
environments, developing computational models of diagnostic problem-solving
methods, and modeling human expert reasoning.
