[luau] Synaptic Error

When I open synaptic I get this error message:
There are two or more versions of the package 'popt' installed in your system, 
which is a situation APT can't handle cleanly at the moment.
Please do one of the following:
1)Keep at most one version of the package in the system; or
2) if you want to keep multiple versions of that package, lookup 
RPM::Allow-DUplicated in the documentation.

Error occurred while processing popt (UsePackage2)

Problem with MergeList /var/lib/rpm/Packages

The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Some console attempts to remove the older package...

popt-1.7-1.06
popt-1.7-9
[dean at W4I0Q7 dean]$ rpm -e popt
error: "popt" specifies multiple packages
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
[dean at W4I0Q7 dean]$ rpm -e popt-1.7-1.06
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages

error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

I guess this is what happens when your PC loses power during synaptic... How 
can I get synaptic to run again? I can't seem to remove this package... is 
there another way?
