Yes, a lot of people can be self taught.  But having attended a
university, there are things you can learn from a class, that you can not
learn on your own.  This is assuming you find a good professor.  There are
actually professors out there that dictates from a book.  It kind of
defeats the purpose of going to class.  The only reason to go to class in
this case is to know what will be on the exams.  The people who do the
best in these types of classes are the self taught people.
