[luau] java performance question

I'm running a java client remotely over ssh, and seeing significantly
degraded performance.  When I run gtk based clients at the same time, I
don't see any problems with them, so I don't think it's a networking
issue.  The machine that I'm logged in to is running RH7.2 w/ the 1.31sdk,
and the machine I'm using to log in is running the same.

Anybody have any experience with this?  Any ideas on how it can be fixed,
or if it's even possible?
