I am not sure what applications you wanted to use, but 5 years is a little
optimistic.  If you're trying to estimate when a Linux desktop would catch
up to a Windows desktop, my estimate would be about 10 to 15 years.
Especially if you are holding out for open source or free software.  A
proprietary solution might be available in 5 years, but then you aren't
really leaving the Windows desktop.
