I just checked Bugtraq archives.  There were two vulnerabilities in
phpBB since March, but both were fixed.  That's relatively quiet for
these types of board things.

I'd say it is safe enough to use, but subscribe to their announce list
and watch for security advisories.  I'll keep an eye out too.
