Ximian has changed the license from the GPL to the XFree86-style license,
very similar the BSD license. This type of license is also open source,
while being more acceptable to businessses because they are allowed to take
the source code and make closed source proprietary products.

On the surface this may seem bad, but this means that Intel and HP will now
contribute to the Mono project. Mono is still open source, and it will
approach completion much sooner with big corporate backing.
