Ralph,
    You need to make sure that your old Gateway can actually use a 
larger hard drive.  Older bioses had 2.1 GB or 10 GB limits.  If you 
plan to buy a modem, make sure NOT to get a winmodem.  Winmodems don't 
have all of the circuitry of a real modem, require the computer to do 
most of the actual communication work, and despite ongoing efforts like 
the the LinModem project, are usually incompatible with Linux.
