Xconfigurator woes

  I'm new to luau, and to Linux, but I've just recently installed Red Hat
7.2 on a slave hd in my computer.  I've managed to get linux running, but
X-Windows is another story.  Xconfigurator asks me questions about my
monitor, but when it tries to test the settings, xconfig reports a problem
and offers to let me go back and correct my settings, or to quit.  I have
a 15in. Compaq Presario 1525 monitor, and I've entered all the correct
information, even the hz and khz ranges from the monitor manual, but to no
avail.
  I've gotten acceptable settings to work once, but it produced a blurry,
darkened version of X-Windows with 1in. wide borders.  After that, I tried
running Xconfigurator again, and x-win stopped working.  Does anyone know
how to get X-win working?
