I've seen the problem you've descibed before.  It happened 
once on a box I was working on, and it turned out that my
mouse had a conflict with another device, so when I booted
up, the mouse never got initialized.  When X tried starting
up, it would crash because it could not find the mouse.  Then
I would be put in that loop you described.  Broken fonts would
do the same thing, or a wrong path to the font dir.

Just curious, when you turn of xdm and log in text mode, does your
mouse work?
