network questions

Thanks for quick response.  I should probably just rtfm on xinetd ;)

As for Q1- I should not that using GNOME's serviceconf 0.6.6 to stop both
ipchains and iptables does not allow me to use mail via pine- didn't try
up2date but will.

Also, how does serviceconf recognize something as a service?  For example it
gives to option to start/stop/boot-start telnet.  What need one do to just
'rip' telnet out.  Other than simply uninstalling the rpm?

    The 2nd part is easiest to answer.  Telnet is only running if you
have set the telnet config file in /etc/xinet.d to have the line disable
=no.  As far as firewalling, I would recommend just going with iptables
and turning the older ipchains off - easy to do with RH's setup program.
 Then, run the excellent script by our favorite firewall wizard, MonMotha.
