Chances are it is in either /usr/local/bin or /usr/local/sbin, so  you 
may want to
try:
/usr/local/bin/smtpd start
or
/usr/local/sbin/smtpd start

Note though, that sendmail, postfix and qmail are more popular smtp servers.
