Excellent article about the Jabber client/server system of Instant
Messaging. Jabber is a secure, centrally controlled instant messaging
system with clients made for Windows, MacOS, Linux and many other platforms.
What makes Jabber more unique is that it easily interoperates with other
popular IM standards, allowing you to simultaneously communicate with people
on AIM or ICQ networks.

A Jabber based instant messaging system solves problems of Lotus Sametime
Connect compatibility with MacOS clients, while allowing a great amount of
flexibility in easily tying into the existing network authentication,
further reducing maintenance time and hassle.

Jabber is available either as a completely free and open sourced version, or
a commercially supported version that costs money, somewhere between $10-35
per client. The commercial version has several key benefits that make it
very attractive over the free version, but fortunately it is available free
for use for organizations that have 100 or fewer users.

Quote from the Info World article
"Jabber IM includes corporate-level control and security that allows
administrators to exercise control over employees by imposing different
access privileges for groups and users. This client/server solution is easy
to use and contains powerful collaboration and security features."
