Sun Microsystems made a proposed Open document format that is based on XML.
It is currently supported by OpenOffice 6 betas and will be in StarOffice 6.

However, I don't think any other Office suite makers jumped on the
bandwagon.

Someone should start the OpenDocumentFormat project. Something that defines
a robust standard document format for word processor, spreadsheet,
presentation, etc. That way all word processors could (would) use those
formats instead of their own proprietary formats. Has anyone heard of such
a project.
