Try do a speed test with hdparm.
hdparm -t /dev/hda
Substitute "/dev/hda" with your actual disk device. Be warned that if your
hard disk is failing this may cause it to stop functioning completely.
Also is DMA enabled?
hdparm -d /dev/hda
What IDE hard drive controller or motherboard chipset are you using? Please
also e-mail the output of
lspci -v
