Dusty-
Regarding computer security, this is (regrettably) an excellent opportunity
for one goal of the list- to promote open source as a predictable source of
software that is demonstrably more resilient. This perhaps one thing you
and Prof. Agre can agree on!
As for your comments on current security, well, I disagree. When I travel I
bring a sewing kit. Every time I leave India they search all passengers and
always take the sewing kit becuase it has scissors and needles- weapons.
Also, in Schipool and Athens at least, all security gaurds look like they
can, and are ready to, run a 3.5 minute mile. In America security are
generally yawning and obese.
As for payment, you are right, we tend to pay the most important people the
least. As an academic I can testify to that! But damn, isn't that a bug
and not a feature?
And for aircraft design, I have always wondered why the pilots don't enter
from a door separate from everyone else, so that to take the cockpit one has
to go outside the airplane. My relatives that are Boeing engineers never
had a good answer to that.
