Installing rpms

It sounds like it might be comparing dates rather than versions or something
funny like that.  I wish I had a linux machine to tell you, but I'm pretty
sure there's a "force" option.  It might be -f, or --force.  Try rpm --help.
But I've seen similar rpm problems such as this, and I'll tell you that
mixing and matching RPMS sometimes causes problems.  For instance, gnome and
helix gnome had very different RPMS for a while, and you had to be very
careful of which one you used.  So it could be a much more complicated issue
than I could perceive.  But since XML isn't too critical for the operation
of your system, I'd try rpm -Uvh --force, or the equivalent, and see if it
likes that.  Either that or rpm -e old ver; rpm -Ivh new ver.
