What are the values of certifications? (Was Re: Sair GNU/Linux thread)

I agree with Deven that Businesses in Hawaii are more then likely to hire a
certified
person verses a uncertifed one. Its can be hard sometimes for the HR
department to
figure out how much you know by looking at your Resume but if they see
certifications
they will definitely take a second look. That's just how life works. The
mainland
is a different story. You don't need certs to get a good job, just as long
as you
can prove to them that you actually know your stuff.

	I'll be the first to admit that certifications really don't mean anything
worth real value to people who know something. The only reason I see for
certifications is for PHBs (Pointy Haired Bosses) whose only understanding
is
that they know a piece of paper. They can't really judge your technical
merits because they don't have the expertise to ask the right questions.
Admittadly, there are far too many certified individuals who don't actually
know much. We all have probably seen the MCSE that doesn't understand the
TCP/IP does not actually fit the OSI reference model, and if you try to tell
them it doesn't they'll argue it till death. I understand this, you
understand this, and more people should understand; but PHBs don't and don't
want to. They want to see a document that says that you know what you are
talking about, end of story. Sad but true.
