cdrom error revisited

Further investigation of my not being able to burn cd's in Mandrake 8.1 is 
that I cannot mount my CDRW drive. I get:

[happy at road:~ (95.940 Mb)]$ mount /dev/scd0
/dev/scd0: No such file or directory
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified

And yet doing a "cdrecord -scanbus" still outputs:

scsibus0:
        0,0,0     0) 'IDE-CD  ' 'R/RW 4x4x24     ' 'Z024' Removable CD-ROM

HELP!
