Probably due to bandwidth, VNC with "Tight" or "Hextile Gzip" encoding would
work better than SSH + X.  Only drawback would be the increased latency in
anything that is animated or real-time.  It may be bad enough to make it
unusable.

You may be better off running WinVNC server in Win4Lin rather than Xvnc.
