Here's a nice little site that I found that can help get you started on

It has a fairly good "basic" ipchains ruleset that you can copy and use to
start building your firewall.

It also has a nice online NetFilterLogAnalyzer where you can cut-and-paste
your ipchains log entries and it will interpret them for you.  Very useful
if you have tripwire or some other program emailing you stuff and you don't
have access to your own tools.
