TCP sinful cookies?

I _should_ have tried that myself.
Uh... the simple answer seems to be that SynCookies were added to the
Linux kernel in 1997 to protect systems from Syn floods, but have to be
turned on like forwarding. Certainly a GOOD thing to include in a
firewall script.
