This is an advanced Linux seminar covering customization of the kernel (the
core of the Linux operating system), walkthrough of general software
installation, and a brief overview of the many server services available on
Linux and Unix platforms.

Kernel Upgrading, Customization & Compilation
    - Downloading latest source code
    - Checking build environment requirements
    - Kernel configuration
    - Compilation
    - LILO and GRUB boot loaders
    - Testing (IDE DMA, network cards, USB, etc.)

System Configuration
    - init, rc.d, /etc/init.d/ script systems
    - chkconfig
    - TCP/IP Networking Configuration
    - linuxconf, webmin graphical setup tools
    - Disabling unneeded services for security

Installing Software in Linux
    - RPM packages
    - rpm commands
    - GUI RPM managers
    - Manual tarball unpacking, configuring, compile, install
    - RPM tarball building
Linux Services Overview *

    - Samba (SMB/CIFS Windows networking and domain server)
    - Netatalk (TCP/IP Appletalk MacOS connectivity)
    - Netfilter (Enterprise grade NAT, firewall and routing)
    - Squid (Proxy cache and content filtering)
    - DHCP Server
    - Arpwatch (network monitoring)
    - Cron (job scheduler)
    - BIND (DNS server)
    - SSH (secure encrypted shell, file transfers and tunnels)
    - Apache (web server)
    - perl, SSI, CGI, PHP, JSP, Java servlets (web dynamic content &
scripting)
    - MySQL, PostgreSQL (database backends)
    - Mail Services (sendmail, qmail, Courier, etc.)
    - Squirrel Mail (web based e-mail)

* I hope to setup and demo many of these services during the seminar, but I
need some help with several that I have not used extensively.  If you are
able to help setup a quick demo of the following software please e-mail me:
Samba - specificially windows domain policy files, Netatalk, JSP, Java
servlets, qmail, BIND.
