pricing comparison between commercial and open source?

I was curious about this -- does anybody know of a comparison between
open source and commercial products?

I was reading Deven's article in Hawaiian Hard drive about making a
Linux "appliance" to act rather like a TiVo on steroids, and his
reasoning about the money saved by the different hardware that he
doesn't need got me to thinking.

It would be an interesting and educational thing to make a comparison
between Open source and commercial software and the commercial
counterparts. I expect somebody has done it already, but a quick web
search didn't get me very far. Does anybody know of such a critter?

Barring that, I was thinking to start working on such a list just for
the sake of bragging rights for the Open Souce folks.
