Ximian's Mono (Monkey, not Virus)

It's official. Ximian's launched the Mono project today with blessings of
the Free Software Foundation. The project will work towards an open source
implementation of the .NET framework. This could potentially be important
to not only the Open Source community, but mainstream developers too.
Ximian in cooperation with the community will work toward implementing an
this GPL and LGPL licensed implementation for both Linux and Windows
platforms. This cross-platform capability will be CRUCIAL to allow seemless
migration paths between Windows and Linux, giving usual Windows developers a
chance to try the GNU alternative rather than only MS Visual Studio.

Think about it this way:
1) If Windows developers see that FREE SOFTWARE works just as well and is
100% compatible, why would they pay hundreds to thousands for Microsoft
Visual Studio?
2) What if Microsoft's .NET becomes very popular among developers? Open
Source will be left behind without a Microsoft free implementation.

Before you start yelling in protest, read these articles about the ACTUAL
TECHNOLOGY first.
