AFS?

It was developed at CMU as a research project, then bought buy a company
called 'Transcend' which was later bought by IBM.
IBM released an Open Source version.
Read that afs-faq on that URL below. This AFS thing is the coolest thing
that I have seen for a very long time. Makes you wish there was an AFSboot
in the kernel instead of NFSboot.
