can't ping the internet

You said you use Mandrake yeah?

Try adding GATEWAY={router address}, where {router address} is the ip of
your router to
 
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

I think that's right.. Of course, that assumes your nic is eth0

then restart networking.
