Matthew Szulik, CEO of Red Hat recently spoke at LinuxWorld that open source
developers should "counter a growing threat from commercial software makers
by getting involved in local school districts and getting free open source
code installed on the districts' machines."

This article talks about the severe costs of school districts being locked
to a single monopolistic vendor for software. They mention the Linux in
schools project at the Riverside school district in Portland, Oregon.

Many of the ideas in this article are near what I am pushing for Linux and
Open Source Software in education, however this article does not go into
detail the importance of being able to buy support and service from multiple
vendors.
