The cable connecting your computer to the cable modem should be a straight-thru. The cable connecting your cable modem to your router should also be straight-thru.
It sounds like you are doing your cabling correctly.

What type of cable does oceanic cable give you to connect the modem to the NIC? Is it a patch or crossover cable? I was using that same cable to connect the modem to the router.
I should be using a crossover cable to connect the modem to the router!
