[LUAU] Dialup PPP from Linux host to PixiNet problems

I've being using 2 RedHat Linux machines to do dial-up to Pixi's main
modem pool for over a year now with no problems.  About 3 weeks ago,
my PPP connections started failing with the chat script reporting a
non 8-bit clean connection.  So I tried dialing their modem pool with
minicom instead to see what was up.  Out of 28 tries last Saturday,
I got the following types of connections:
 a) 7 times  "login:" "Password:" authentication followed by PPP negotiation
             This is good, it's what my ppp-login script is looking for

 b) 6 times  A "System Password:" prompt - goes nowhere for me
             This is not good (for me or any other user, I suspect)

 c)15 times  "login:" "Password:" authentication followed by a terminal
                      
             server prompt of the form "servername% " where the server
             names I've seen are mothra, ghidora, gorgax, battra, angilas,
             gambit and behemoth.  At the terminal server prompt, I can
             do various things including show user, show pool, telnet but
             can't convert to PPP even if I issue the PPP command to the
             access server (I get a "Requested service is not authorized").
             This is not good, either.

My PPP dialups from the same PCs running Win95 with the same account info work
almost every time.  I suspect the difference between a Win95 DUN connection
and a Linux pppd/chat script is some authentication thing (PAP, CHAP, MSCHAP?)
but the logs available under Win95 DUN don't show me anything useful.  There
seems to be a gap between what MODEMLOG.TXT and PPPLOG.TXT show.

Is anyone else doing PPP dialup from Linux boxen to PixiNet?  Has something
changed in the past month that anyone is aware of?

PixiNet tech support has tried to help but they are stumped.
