[LUAU] TCP/IP WANs

I'm using ADSL from GTE. It was a breeze to setup on Linux after I got the
second ethernet card figured out (I think having the same type of card
helped). I had everything setup ahead of time, so when the ADSL was
installed, I was literally up and running in minutes. I'm using Maui
Gateway (even though I'm in Honolulu). They were very competitive. Pixi is
about the same price for home customers. There are about 5 providers
offering ADSL. Some have the same price for home and commercial, others
have a different price structure. I'm using IP masquerade so the other
machines on my home network have access to the Internet, which has worked
out well. I'm using an old 486/66 with 20 meg of ram and when I do a top,
it seems to be idle most of the time, so it seems to have more than enough
power. You should be able to find two old 486's cheaply enough. Make sure
your provider gives you static IP addresses to make it easier for you to
set up.

With ADSL, frame relay or Road Runner, remember that you are online 24/7 so
you have to make sure you have security on your gateway machine. I get
gently probed about once a week by cretins looking for someone to relay
their spam email.

ADSL was significantly cheaper than frame relay in both monthly cost and in
the external hardware cost. GTE had a special when I signed up (about 2
months ago?) where the installation of about $100 _included_ the ADSL modem
(usually about $300).
