Well, I just set something like this up for a client. There are several
issues to consider, such as, are you routing to another LAN or a WAN, or
are you routing to the Internet through a dialup, ISDN, or roadrunner
account? Do you have static or dynamic IP address(es) from your
provider or sysadmin? Are you currently using DHCP to provide
IP addresses on your network? How concerned are you with security?

My client Lyon Associates, a civil engineering firm downtown, has a
(shudder) 15 node windows 95 peer to peer network. They were using a
windows 95 product (E-Virt something or other), a proxy server, not a
real IP masquerading solution, and it was crashing all the time,
dropping email, etc. I had been at them for a year to use linux, but it
was the article in the advertiser last friday that finally convinced
them. I installed Debian 2.0 on an old 486, set up IP Masquerading
according to the Mini-HOWTO, (be sure to see the section on proper
settings for ipfwadm), set up wwwoffled for web caching, and fetchmail
to periodically download email. I also set up IMAP so they could all
read the same public email account from their own machines. I didn't
use DHCP, instead choosing to manually assign IP addresses and put in
the gateway and DNS info. A week later, and they are very happy.
Needles to say, it hasn't crashed once.
