Yep, that was VNC and it can do just what you described. I use it all day
long to connect from Win95 PCs to servers running Win95, WinNT and Linux.
It works like a dream on a 10Mbit LAN. Also works over PPP on a 33.6 dialup
but it crawls unless you are careful about the resolution and color depth
on the server and the complexity of the display. But it sure beats driving
50 miles roundtrip at 3AM.
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc is the current URL. Olivetti and Oracle
Research Laboratory (ORL) was aquired by AT&T and is now AT&T Laboratories
Cambridge.
The VNC product is free and Open Source.
Would anyone like to see a demo at the next meeting?
