Sorry for the long time in getting this reply out, but I have been out of
town for the last 2 weeks and am just now catching up with my email.  I'll
have to give that a try (gonna reload my system with Redhat 5.2 one of these
days)

I've done none of this and have set up four of them.
I'm still using the out-of-the-box kernel.  The magic
is in /etc/conf.modules - for same type cards.
