George,

With Win95 OSR2 Microsoft changed the way they handle SMB passwords. OSR2 and
later , Win98, NT SP3 and such refuse to connect to SMB servers that do not 
support password encryption.

There a couple of ways to handle this by either enabling password encryption in
Samba or disabling the OSR2 behavior in Win95/Win98.
